Photodynamic Therapy for Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer

 

A relatively new approach to cancer treatment uses a combination of chemicals and laser light. In this procedure, a chemical compound is applied to the area that makes the cancer cells sensitive to laser light. After a waiting period, a laser is targeted to the cells. Within a few days, the cancer cells die and fall away. Photodynamic therapy does not have long-term side effects and does not cause scarring. Patients who have had this treatment tend to have a temporary sensitivity to light and are advised to avoid excessive sun exposure for some period after the treatment.

Cell Genesys says higher deaths gag trial

August 27, 2008 — BANGALORE (Reuters) - Cell Genesys Inc said it stopped a late-stage trial of its prostate cancer therapy, GVAX, after 20 more deaths were reported in patients on the drug versus those on a dummy treatment, and its shares crashed more than 75 percent to an all-time low.
