Is there really such a thing as 'chemo brain?'

Q: Is there really such a thing as "chemo brain" that creates difficulty with concentration and makes me more forgetful?

A: Chemotherapy can negatively affect your cognitive functioning. How it does this is still unclear. Other factors, such as anemia (low red blood count), aging, or depression may contribute to your difficulties. Problems with memory and concentration can stop after treatment ends or continue as long-term side effects.

Research is exploring how to prevent or counteract "chemo brain," but no scientific solution has been found as yet. If you're having cognition problems, try reducing distractions when you need to concentrate, use a daily planner to stay organized, write down things you want to remember, and reduce stress with regular exercise and ample sleep.
