    Anal cancer

Is there anyone who has gone through their radiation and chemo for anal cancer that can give me some helpful hints?  I have lost 11 lbs., been put on IV fluids twice and had 4 infections and I'm only 2.5 weeks into my treatment.

    Re: Anal cancer

Dear Mimagli: I sympathize with you about the difficulties you describe, which are obviously very challenging. As an oncologist who has guided many patients through treatment of anal cancer, I have two things I'd like to say. First, while every person's response and tolerance to chemo and radiation is unique, what you describe sounds unusual for someone who is so early in the treatment process. If you have not already done so, I encourage you to speak with your medical and radiation oncologists about your difficulties and ask what more they can do to help you. Second, the good news is that response rates to treatment for anal cancer can often be excellent and longlasting. Obviously, I don't know the details of your cancer stage or type, your treatment protocol, or your medical history. But I can say that it is important to take heart, and do all you can to move forward safely and successfully with your treatment. Please feel free to let me know if you have any additional questions or if I can be of further assistance.
