    sex during chemo----

My partner is afraid that having unprotected sex while I am getting chemo could lead to her losing her hair. Could this be true???

Freds, you have asked a great question.  When you first discuss chemotherapy with your healthcare team you are told that chemo is a systemic treatment-meaning that it travels through your bloodstream to most all parts of your body.  Chemotherapy is broken down quickly and leaves your body mainly through your urine and stool.  Only a very few chemo drugs may be present in vaginal fluids or semen in very small (almost immeasurable) amounts.  Your partner will NOT lose her hair from having unprotected sex with you.  However, if your partner worries about exposure, you may want to wear a condom for extra reassurance especially in the first day or two after receinig chemo.  It is always important to practice birth control to avoid a pregnancy while you are

what the other person didn't mention is that after each treatment for the first week the chemo can also come out of your pores, from sweating and during that week you should be careful about your partner getting the chemo on her.  it won't do major  damage to them, but it could burn their skin lightly at least thats what my doc told me.  you should also try not sweating that first week and then hugging someone(while your all sweaty). our bodies are used to it so it won't  bother our skin the way it will someone elses.

I did read info online that said you should avoid sex for up to 3 days after chemo treatments in order to prevent transfer of the chemo drugs.  Be creative...
