    Facing ovarian cancer

I recently had a CT scan for abdomenal discomfort.  The preliminary diagnosis is ovarian cancer....a very large tumor is on my right ovary and the lymph nodes seem to be affected.  Surgery is scheduled in 2 1/2 weeks, so until then I am in the dark and running scared. They have me taking Darvocet for the discomfort and pain.  I am preparing for the worst and hoping I am wrong.  I have been on line getting as much info as possible.  I don't want to upset or scare friends, so the need to talk has been replaced with a lot of tears.  I know that I am not the first and will not be the last  to feel this way, but that doesn't make it any easier.

Hi Joey!  Glad to say that all seems to be going well.  I had my surgery on Dec. 4th (stage 3C), started chemo on Jan. 30th, and have just had my 6th treatment (treatments have been every 21 days), hopefully the last!  My side affects have been fatique, aches, shortness of breath, itchy skin, and some blurred vision.  Nothing tramatic :)  My white cell count always falls low just befor my treatments, but then raises just in time. I am part of a clinical trial (GOG-218) that will continue to monitor me through Yale New Haven Hospital, Dr. Rutherford.  I have been back to work full time since Feb.2nd.  I realize how incredably fortunate I am.  I also realize that I am not out of the woods.  This has been a real wake up call and puts things into perspective.  I have been able to stay positive and in control of my life.  I want to be sure that all women listen to their bodies and don't make excuses for lingering symptoms.....see your doctor!!!  I have found that it is better to talk about this, rather than keep it inside yourself.

Thank you for your encouragement so early on.

    Barbara
