Hi Paula, sorry to hear about your fiance Tom...  I am Lucille and I am a 3 year Breast Cancer survivor.  My Mother had Breast Cancer which has lead to Bone cancer... The good part is that it's been 16 years and she is still living a full life.  Sometimes it's hard to find someone who understands.  It is hard path but it good to talk about it..  Hi, My name is Nancy. I had Hodgkins disease at 20years old and was treated with radiation in 1983. In 2004 I was diagonised with thyriod cancer probably caused by the radiation. I was treated with surgery and  I131 radiation therapy. In 2007 they found more cancer and had another surgery and more I131 treatment.  I am starting to see a counsler because all the doctors and tests are over whelming. She stated it is a good idea to see someone because depression and cancer goes together. If you have any questions about some of my treatments let me know. Stay strong!

Hi, I am Lucille - I was diagnosed with breast cancer in Nov 20, 2005.  I had a lumpectomy and 6 weeks of radiation.  I have thyroid problems, does not produce enough hormone, for as long as I can remember. 

It does seem true that cancer and depression are good friends.  It can be hard when you are diagnosed with cancer of any kind.  After you are diagnosed it seems that your life gets busy with tests and doctor visits.  This month it will be 3 years and when I see my doctor I still get nervous.  I have a mammogram and a PET Scan scheduled in Dec and I don't look forward to it.  But it is good to talk about it.  You have gone far and that's great.  What helps me sometimes is to take things a day at a time and sometimes a minute at a time.

I was just diagnosed this month also and have the feeling my husband if feeling the same way.  I find knowledge is power and the more you know and understand what is happening the less scared you are of the future (but not always).  I just find with me and my husband knowing what to expect is always better than imagining the worst. 

Have you contacted the American Cancer Society, Reach for Recovery program?  They provide many programs for patient and loved ones for support and all kinds of stuff.  The website is www.cancer.org.

Hope this helps!  It's a big shock and takes some time to absorb it all.

 Well, Paula, I don't have Esophical cancer. I had ovarian but I used to sit in front of this man at our treatments. I used to watch him almost every time I was there with him. He looked much worse than I did and I knew there was nothing I could do. So I just stayed there and talked to him. Just as a normal human being and I never brought up his issue unless he wanted to talk about it. But you never know what to do. But you do enough by just being there and askin him for things he can't get on his own.. That is all you can do. But trust me, you are doin more than most.

It does take time to absorb and kind of get your head screwed on right again.

We are both doing better now on that thanks to the Wellness Community. I don't know where you live, but there should be one in your area! 

I know there isn't much that scares me anymore! I'm in the "getting used to it" phase.

Tom is getting so much better. He's eating again and gaining some strength and weight back. We both had a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. Including Tom going for thirds on Thanksgiving. :)

Sorry to hear about your boyfriends diagnosis! And Yes there are alotof us out here, scared to death and fighting many different types of CA, keep coming to this site, I found it to be very helpful, in coping with what lies ahead, I was recently diagnosed wit colorectal cancer, just started my chemo and radiation treatments, with a good possible outcome of surgery, but the best that I can say is, help him keep a positive attitude, and try to keep one for him, things are changing everyday and the treatments have come along way. Good Luck to you both and keep God close to your side.
