    Head and Neck Cancers

Hello I'm David. In September of 2007 I underwent a right parotidectomy, but declined the recommended follow up radiation therapy. In October of 2008 I presented a mass at my right jawline that was confirmed a recurrent carcinoma. A right modified radical dissection was performed and follow up radiation therapy was recommended. I must make a decision very soon about whether or not to do the radiation. Is there anyone out there with an experience similar to mine who would be willing to share their experience with me?

Hi Daivid. my name  is Sarah I have was diaginosis with tonsile cancer that had spread to my soft palate & tongue. also 4 of my limp nodes.  i had surgery april 13, 2009 and a hospital stay of five weeks due to complication of infection.  I am a type II diabectic, I found out from my radiation onocologist yesterday 6-22-09 that my cancer was stage 4 and the it was very aggressive. I went back to my surgeon today and he wants me to get my treatment started right away since my cancer was a stage 4.  I start next week with chemo & raditation i am scared to death.  my dr feels that the cancer may be back and i need to get started.  I will let you know my outcome later.  I live in the Hannibal MO.

My husband had his parotid gland removed in May of 20010. He followed up with radiation and just had a MRI of his face, brain, and neck. No results back yet. He lost most of his taste but it is slowly returning. He also lost 40 lbs but is starting to gain. They really recommend radiation as if only one cell drops during surgery, it will grow back. At least with the kind of cancer he had.

    Re: Head and Neck Cancers

My husband was diagnosed with a leiomyosarcoma of the ethmoid sinus in March2010.After the biopsy, the tumor went crazy...it is so rare doctors didn't know what to do.After the tumor board met several times, they recommended surgery. It was so risky, I contacted the NIH and was able to find out about Neutron therapy(super-duper radiation.)He had 12 neutron treatments at the Fermi Lab @ NIU in Batavia, IL. They stopped the tumor from growing and it has actually shrunk. Unfortunately, scans indicated a renal cell on his kidney. This was removed in July. Recent scans indicate some small sarcomas in one lung, so he has just started chemo.

I know this probably wasn't much help, but Neutron therapy has been very successful for head and neck sarcomas.

Hope things go well for you.
