Level 7: The Nature of Spirit

The Nature of Spirit is, in many ways, the most important level of the entire Seven Levels of Healing®. It is also, quite often, the most overlooked and misunderstood area of “whole person” care. Even in the most progressive cancer centers and medical practices, the idea of spirit, and our spiritual nature, is rarely addressed in a conscious or coherent way. Yet spirit is fundamental to our nature as human beings. Timeless, eternal, and dimensionless, it is also the source from which awareness, creativity—and, ultimately, the deepest levels of healing—flow.

Finding one’s spiritual essence is an intimate process of self-discovery, often taking place in nature, silence, meditation, or prayer. It can occur in communion with family, loved ones, friends, or other patients. It can also happen spontaneously when people feel genuinely embraced in an atmosphere of unconditional love. Level 7 of The Seven Levels of Healing helps us recognize that living with conscious awareness of our connection with spirit is possible in the midst of daily activities, including treatment for cancer. Doing so softens and dissolves much of the stress and tension involved in all aspects of living.

In recognizing and experiencing The Nature of Spirit, patients discover that no matter what happens to the physical body, there is another part of them that is timeless and eternal, always whole and complete, and untouched by their circumstances. When this occurs, patients become less anxious or distressed, and the potential for healing deepens and expands. They, and their loved ones, are better able to make choices and respond to events from a place of inner wisdom, strength, and love—rather than from anxiety and fear.

Incorporating a spiritual dimension into modern cancer care brings joy and fulfillment not only to patients but also to doctors, nurses, and all members of the health care team. In Level 7, the deepest healing takes place and the ultimate goal of medicine is achieved.
